Sunday in the Woods

It was bitterly cold yesterday, but the sun seemed brighter and warmer, and the forest hollows are beginning to take on the colours, contours and textures of Spring.

At this time of year, the snow forms wonderful frosted patterns along the forest floor and fringes every puddle and spring with delicate fronds and luminescent sparkles. The trees in the woods cast intense blue shadows which attenuate dramatically as the day progresses, and the shadows seem to take on a life of their own, doing a kind of morris dance up the hillside and further along the trail deep into the woods. Every stream and spring on the place is open and flowing freely, and the woods are full of airs and dances, happy sounds of gurgles, chimes and little waterfalls just over the hill.

Cate, thanks so much for leaving a comment in my blog. I didn't know you had one -- didn't blog much last year -- and such a grand one it is. I love your photos and your writing. Feels very good to be in touch with you again.

The snow . . . my son (age 28) and his wife moved to Portland, Maine from Bellingham WA last spring after a southern California childhood -- he is loving the snow more than I thought possible! We only had a bit in early December but supposedly some is on its way. Thanks for your gorgeous photos.
