Hepatica Rising

These few small buds of Hepatica were the first real sign that Spring is on its way in Lanark. There were only one or two clumps of this tiny wildflower showing amid the dead grasses and dry leaves yesterday, but they were a pleasure to see. I also noticed that the wonderfully mottled leaves of the Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum) are starting to appear in the woods, along with glossy shoots of the White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum), Red Trillium (Trillium erectum), Painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum), the first feathery fronds of Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) and Ostrich Ferns (Matteuccia struthiopteris).

I marked the location of these buds carefully, and today I will check to see if they have opened.
