The Wet Rambling

Wild Leek (Allium tricoccum)

Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum biflorum)

Yesterday's potter into the woods was a wet one. I went attired in wellies and poncho with thoughts of capturing the trilliums in the valley on my memory card and bringing them home at the end of the day, but on the path down to the spring I encountered an wild turkey hen who was insistent that I go no further. Did I take a photo of her? No, I stood there with camera in hand, marvelling at her irridescent plumage, wondering where her nest was, and it didn't even occur to me to take a picture until she had disappeared into the soggy thicket. I didn't really have to capture the agitated turkey mother's image yesterday, and I was just happy to learn that there are nesting turkeys in one of the valleys on the Two Hundred Acre Wood.

Near the stream on the other side of the hill, bright new green leaves of the Wild Leek are "well up". There are healthy specimens of Solomon's Seal growing near the stream, and there are sodden drifts of Toothwort everywhere. As we closed the gate, a solitary Pine Grosbeak perched in an aspen up on the hill and burst into song, and a whole flock of Goldfinches flew overhead. I returned home soaking wet, feeling very contented and not the slightest bit put out by the rainy weather.

This sounds like a nearly perfect "potter" in the rain :=)

Nothing better to make the home and a bowl of soup or cup of tea the perfect moment of reflection.
