This week, the theme at Mama Says Om is "yo-yo". One of my dictionaries defines the yo-yo as a toy consisting of a flattened spool wound about with string or twine which is spun down from the hand and reeled back up to the hand by motions of the wrist. My thesaurus gives the following as synonyms:
(verb) alter, change, exchange, fluctuate, follow, interchange, intersperse, oscillate, relieve, rotate, seesaw, shift, substitute, sway, vacillate, vary, waver; (adjective) arbitrary, bizarre, careless, changeful, contrary, crotchety, effervescent, erratic, fanciful, fickle, fitful, flaky, flighty, freakish, higgledy-piggledy, humorsome, impulsive, inconstant, lubricious, mercurial, moody, mutable, notional, odd, picky, punchy, quirky, scattered, temperamental, ticklish, unpredictable, unreasonable, unstable, vagarious, variable, volatile, wayward, whimsical; (noun) ass, blockhead, chump, clod, dimwit, dunce, fool, idiot, ignoramus, nitwit, oaf, twit, simpleton.
The yo-yo seems to be a good metaphor for my life, up and down and all around, then starting over again, and I am going to go merrily along with the following:
(1) A beguiling toy made of wood and string - I had one as a child, played with it for hours and hours and more hours even. A few of my family still think of me as wayward, scattered and inclined to be whimsical at times.
(2) The greatest living master of the cello and classical (as well as jazz) works for that instrument and one of my favourite classical musicians ever, that incandescent fellow, Yo-Yo Ma.

I especially like the first image. Is it yours? :)
Thanks, the first one is old, and I did a few for a child's party years ago, a yo-yo, a top and a rocking horse and (I think) a teddy bear.
Wonderful essay on "yo-yo"
Just the name "Yo-Yo Ma evokes a sense of being submerged in music...
I loved the yo-yo when I was a child - my brother developed a real talent with the toy. These images are delightful!
The bottom illustration is another of the images you present that sets my imagination to flight...
Great post!
That image is great-you are very talented.
