On the Shore

This morning's splendid birds are for a dear friend in California who loves them as much as I do. One of my happiest memories ever is of a morning three years ago in the Lanark Highlands when she was visiting and a whole flock of Canada Geese flew over our heads, bound for the Tay river.

Sitting on the shore in early evening yesterday, I knew one of those moments of utter stillness which come along so rarely in life. The evening was still and perfect and there was hardly a sound, only the water, the geese, the sun going down and one lone female nearby. All the cares of the last few days packed up and flew off into the twilight, and they went quietly.

This morning I find I have no need to describe it all, the colour of the lake and its slow dark ripples, the late sunshine or the magnificent geese and their little ones. Sometimes I wish there were more of these moments in life, but if they appeared every day or two, would I be able to appreciate them as I did this one?

Well, I always think that these lovely moments are always happening somewhere, if not in our backyard. I can almost see the forward motion in that photo.
