It's one of those glorious late January days, clear blue sky, wind and brilliant sunshine, light sparking off the cold white blanket over the garden and snowflakes cavorting in the air above.
The temperature here is approximately -21 degrees Celsius this morning (approximately -6 Fahrenheit methinks), and we are clearing out again - enough snow fell overnight to make walking treacherous and ramping up the driveway in the Passat something of a chore. There is slick ice lurking everywhere underneath all the newly fallen snow, and our sunrise walk was a careful one.
Whatever the temperature and precipitation, the Buddha (Hotei) in my snow crowned garden is a happy fellow and continues to smile on us from his sunny corner, although now covered in snow. His round beaming face can't be seen in late January, but we know that he is smiling and try to remember it as we are heaving snow off the cobblestones and out of the driveway, our shovels full of white stuff describing graceful arcs as they fly through the air and come to rest in the yard.
This morning, the new snow and clear blue light falling across the railing behind the Buddha's comfortably seated figure in the garden were wonderful to look at. (Sigh), now back to shovelling. . . .

I cannot see the Hotei at my new house. I think he should have a cap of snow on his hair and still have the all-knowing and peacful contenance.
Well, I thought it was always sunny and warm in California, and nowhere was ever more than a few minutes drive from a beach. Am I mistaken?
Oops, Ontario the Canadian province and not Ontario, California - although California does exert quite a tug on the old sensibilities at this time of year - it's a lot warmer and there is less snow to shovel!
