Green Light

Norway Spruce
(Picea abies)

There is something bewitching about the high green light dancing through the towering Norway spruce in the garden a little after sunrise. As I stand by the window in early morning with my coffee, the light coming through the gracefully arching branches always makes me feel like doing a bit of cavorting myself, an ecstatic lurching or hobble with my arms upraised in celebration (being careful not to spill my coffee of course).

The tangy fragrance wafting through the screen into the kitchen this morning is intoxicating stuff, and the colour is wonderful - how I longed for this opulent green light during the winter.

Perfect, perfect pictures. And more than twice the effect by having two of them. I sometimes wonder why pine trees are so deep in my soul - I was born in a city and live in chalk downlands. But pine trees transport me. And the sound the wind makes in their branches....

Cate, I was with you in longing for that opulent green light, all winter long. And now it is time to revel in it, be grateful for it, and store it in our souls for next winter. Your lovely words and images remind me to do so!

The light filtering through the spruce is gorgeous ... there is something ethereal about light at this time of year. And scent ... today I was in my garden breathing in the incredible scent of the Broom - beautiful pale pinky-mauve blooms.
