Eastern Tiger Swallowtail(Papilio glaucus)
Our first Eastern Tiger Swallowtail of the season made its appearance in an old lilac by the shore of Dalhousie Lake yesterday morning, and I was prowling among the cattails looking for herons at the time, but I had to stop and take a photo of it.
All summer long, we watch the swallowtails flitting about among the milkweed and along the shoreline, but the first appearance of the season is always wonderful to witness.
I leave my earthbound and restless self behind in these ramblings, in my scattered scraps, shards and snippets of focus out in the woodland and down by the water, and I find myself dissolving as effortlessly as a raindrop into everything around me. I am still and complete for a short time, and there is flight in my thoughts. Perhaps somewhere up the trail and further along this winding journey, I shall become a dancing swallowtail, an osprey suspended over the river, an owl drifitng along in the night, or a falcon riding the wind.
There are times when I can almost taste that soaring still to be, when I can feel the wind along my wings.

What a gorgeous shot! I have a Dutchman's Pipe vine that is in full bloom right now, and loaded with swallowtail caterpillars. Just lovely.

I was just thinking about butterflies last night. I watched Spike Lee's documentary, "When the Levees Broke," and wondered about what happens to birds and worms and flocks of butterflies in a hurricane.
Anyway, I just learned what a swallowtail looks like. I will open my eyes this week. Thanks.

What a lovely post and photograph. I was sitting outside near my garden the other day and had a butterfly that looked a lot like this one come to my garden, I felt like it was blessed!
In my private neck of the (dark) woods, she is the Trillium moon. I enjoyed reading all the other names.
And tiger swallowtail also visited my lilacs. Like you, I couldn't resist the haiga op....
