Visitor

My beautiful mermaid sister Joanna of the Gaian Tarot Artist's Journal has posted about a recent visitor to her garden, a Blacktail deer, and while I have little experience with this western species, her visitor appears be a doe, from the lack of antlers. By this time of the year, our resident Whitetail bucks (or stags) are sporting antlers, and I suspect this is also the case with western mule deer.

Yesterday's surprise visitor to the garden behind the little blue house in the village was not a deer, but a young Eastern Cottontail rabbit, and she (I think it was a she) was all artfully variegated fur, inquisitive ears and limpid dark eyes. Like deer, little rabbits have wonderful expressive eyes, and if they choose to dine on my marigolds, they are quite welcome to do so.

Wonder if that is what is dining on some of my veggies. But it is a beauty!!!

What a sweetie, and what a great photo. You can see every hair in his coat.

He could have my marigolds, too, if I had any. Fortunately, our local wabbits seems to like dandelions just fine.

I know deer and rabbits are garden pests that are destroyers of gardens, but I agree, it's hard to hate them with those expressive eyes.
I don't have to worry about deer in So Cal, but my vegetable garden provides lovely fresh greens to the rabbits and other pests, whether or not I want to.

Tabor, the lettuce, beans and peppers are safe in a fenced enclosure almost as secure as Fort Knox.
