No doubt about it, September's moon is my favorite in the whole turning year... It is also (above all others), the one I can't describe or take a good photo of, no matter how extensive my preparations and careful my labors. Every year, I potter off to a good vantage point, set up camera, telescope and tripod, check my settings and wait patiently. The moon rises, and I stand in the darkness like a fool, breathless and wide-eyed, grasping a scant handful of words to describe the most beautiful moon of the year. Bearing witness to this month's full moon is a personal, seasonal rite, and if I had to brew up a name of my own for it, that name would be "Hallelujah Moon".
I once described the situation as something of a cosmic joke, this business of a creaky female standing on her hill and taking photo after photo of the full moon but never a good one. Well, here we are again, another glorious Harvest Moon has just gone by, and another folder of mediocre images has been captured. It brings to mind the old Zen tale in which a monk on his deathbed was asked to describe his mindful life, and he replied blithely, "just one mistake after another..."
Last night, Lady Moon was as golden as a harvest moon should be, and as the last super moon of the year, she was truly impressive. Whether or not I managed to capture her perfectly does not matter a fig or a hoot in the greater scheme of things, it is the doing that matters. Into the night sky she climbed like a great lantern, and Himself, Spencer and I were out in the darkness together, hand in paw, to watch her rise. As we packed up our stuff later, we couldn't help thinking that such pearly magnificence deserved a gesture of some kind, a chorus, a chant or a benediction - something grander and more luminous than our bows and sighs of contentment.

I know how frustrating it is to see such beauty and not to be able to capture it in all its glory! It leaves the soul aching for more and a sadness that we are unable to grasp the image that so enthralls us! I feel exactly the same when trying to capture a glorious sunset, clouds etc.
You have posted a marvelous photo. We had cloud cover, so missed that super moon completely, but so welcomed the gentle and lengthy rain.
Beautiful...
It's a beautiful photo. It just may not live up to the experience. And that is as it should be.
Some photos are just photos...some moons are just moons. And then there are photos. And then there are moons. For me, no could see, clouds took care of my experience, so yours is 100% better than mine!
I'm enjoying finding so many blogs with incredible pictures of the harvest moon. Autumn is definitely here!
