Spring is Springing

One day there is snow, and everyone is going about in woolly hats, gloves, boots and parkas. The next day, we are bare legged in short sleeves and sandals. Temperatures are well above freezing, skies are brilliantly blue, and dazzling sunlight turns everything in sight golden.

Pileated woodpeckers are excavating nests in the park, a process that will take several weeks. Starlings are donning their warm weather plumage and putting on bright yellow beaks, and a pair of crows is building a nest in the big pine behind the little blue house. At intervals, they take a break from flying in and out of the old tree with nesting materials, sing their pleasure in the season, preen each other, do a little dancing and execute brief "flurry flights" over their territory.

When the first daffodils lifted their delicate heads out of the earth in a protected garden alcove this week, I felt like kneeling down and kissing them. If only my soulmate was here to experience it with me. Spring was his favorite season, and trying to do it without him is rough, very, very rough.

Oh I know how your miss your dear one. Sharing is part of the caring and laughter of our lives. I'm so glad you've finally got daffodils! Ours have been gone for a few weeks now. But they were such joy to see at the beginning of spring. That joyful exuberance is a good memory here.

Sending so much love your way, dearest.

Much love and big-as-the-prairie-sky hugs, too!
