It's the light that stops you right in your tracks on a cold day in the depths of February, blue sky and gossamer clouds above, frozen lake far below and hills way off in the distance. Buttery winter sunlight passes through veils of blowing white and lingers lovingly on the snowy spruces guarding the heights above the lake. I think of them as the snow people. They are kindred spirits and old friends.
What on earth can one say about the astonishing light? Is there a word in the English language up to the task of describing something as glorious as this? Perhaps the best thing to do is say nothing, get out of the way and just let the camera do its thing.
In the words of Diane Ackerman, I am standing in the sky, and it feels right to be here among the snow people, wide-eyed and breathless and drinking in the honeyed light. It's like being on top of the world, and I may even be doing a little glowing myself.
